The multiple levels of negotiations and resistance to hybrid identity put in place by South Asians living in the West
Introduction South Asians were the first Asian immigrants to arrive in the United States of America in the 19th century after the discovery of gold in California. The term ââ¬ËSouth Asiansââ¬â¢ is a hybrid identity of the current Asian immigrants from the seven Asian countries that include Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The multiple levels of negotiations and resistance to hybrid identity put in place by South Asians living in the West specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The termis used to bring a diverse population into a common pool of people who share identity through common economic and political history. South Asians got into the United States as a minority people vulnerable to oppressions from the locals based on their race, sexuality, origin, religion, and economic weaknesses. However, over the centuries, the group has gradually resis ted oppression to become one of the contemporarymost powerful minority groups in the United States and other western countries. In addition, it has resisted the hybrid identity to demand individual identity all over the western countries, but mostly in the United States and the United Kingdom. Some scholars argue that South Asian Americans garnered their identity as they resisted economic problems, but this paper holds that inferiority complex fueled the multiple levels of negotiations and resistance of these immigrants to oppression in the United States. The multiple levels of negotiations and resistance After their emigration to the West in the 19th century, South Asians were vulnerable to oppression from the locals due to their economic weaknesses and general inferiority complex. South Asians viewed Western countries as land of opportunities, and thus a majority of elite people in the South Asian countries was attracted to the western nations as their countries already had econom ic downturns. The emigration of South Asian Americans from their countries is viewed to have been a mass movement of people as western countries received many people who exceeded the demand for labor at the mines and construction sites in the century. In late 19th century, already there was a great population of South Asian Americans that exceeded the demand for labor in the US. Hence, they felt inferior to the locals, which consequently rendered them submissive to oppression from the westerners. For instance, already many Chinese people had emigrated from China after the country experienced economic depression that rendered many people jobless, and they had already occupied areas where mining and railway constructions sites were located. Upon their arrival in western economies, the majority of South Asians population was exposed to further economic problems in a foreign land. Hence, in a bid to overcome the economic problems, South Asians were left with no option rather than to see k jobs that locals had shunned, which included the servantsââ¬â¢ jobs in the constructions sites, but a few secured vacancies in the railway construction and mining sites as menial workers.Advertising Looking for essay on asian? As aforementioned, South Asiansââ¬â¢ problems exposed them to oppression from the locals based onsocial, economic, and political status. Socially, Asians were viewed as illiterate as a majority could not access quality education as opposed to the local citizens who had better education. However, a few parents managed to enroll their children in schools where they were exposed to discrimination from their local peers on race, religious, and other social basis. Hence, South Asians felt the firsthand discrimination experience right from childhood from their peers to adulthood whereby good jobs were reserved for locals and other races that were viewed as more superior to the immigrants (Gupta 143). These compounding elements heightened South Asiansââ¬â¢ inferiority complex, and thus they could not accept hybrid identity, as they wanted to stick together without the influence of outsiders. Religion and cultural values seemed to prompt the locals to discriminate South Asians in western countries. South Asians did not adopt the western cultures upon their immigration (Tarlo 82), but instead they retained their strong cultural values, which enabled them to settle in large numbers at a particular place. This aspect cemented their resistance to hybrid identity, as they never mingled freely with other cultures. For instance, the Chinese had their own Chinese towns where they displayed their cultural heritage to people of other cultures. Indians also settled in specific regions where they also practiced their culture and religious believes. The failure to adopt the western cul ture made them antisocial and locals often viewed them as unwelcoming people. However, South Asians did not accept defeat. On the contrary, they endeavored to fight for their human dignity and identity in the foreign land tirelessly from one generation to another. It was easier for the initial immigrants to suffer the stated oppression than to embrace hybrid identity. South Asians are truly one of the minority groupings in the United States. Nevertheless, their resistance to adopt western values has made them one of the most powerful racial groups as well. The group mostly entailspeople whose origin is from South Asian countries, though a majority of them is bornin the United States of the third generation of the pioneer South Asian immigrants. The rising of South Asian dignity has been gradual ever since the immigration of their ancestors in the 19th century during the gold rush and railway construction period. Their ancestors belonged to the demonized minority due to their weak eco nomic and social status as compared to the locals. However, today, their descendants have proved to be the model minority in the land where their ancestors endured great pain of oppression.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The multiple levels of negotiations and resistance to hybrid identity put in place by South Asians living in the West specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In addition to retaining their values over generations, which have played a major role in empowering them, South Asians have become better as compared to people belonging to other races in the western economies and studies shows that they have improved their identity through entrepreneurship. South Asians have grown to be one of the leading entrepreneurs in their areas of settlement, and hence they have employed locals who once discriminated them (Bhavnani 189). Hence, the locals became accommodative to the South Asians after realizing that they t oo benefited from what they had to offer. Today, South Asian youths form one of the most admired minority groups in academic institutions as they are perceived to be morally upright and they stick to their values as opposed to other groupings that have adopted modernized culture, hence eroding their morals and values in society. Therefore, South Asians have retained a higher dignity in society as compared to their counterparts. However, there have been challenges amongst South Asian Americans minority groups where immigrants from certain South Asian countries face oppression from their counterparts. Initially, the term ââ¬ËSouth Asianââ¬â¢ was generally used to refer to immigrants from the seven southern Asian countries. Nowadays, the Japanese, Koreans, and Chinese are also referred to as South Asian immigrants. This aspect has led to divisions of the group where religion and ethnic divisions have been used as a basis for segregation. Some members often view themselves as more superior to their counterparts, hence oppressing the rest by making them feel weaker. Hence, the battle of supremacy led to the fighting for dignity by some members like Indians who felt left out of the group on an ethnic basis. Others like Bangladesh and Pakistan immigrants felt oppressed on religion basis. These divisions led to the redefinition of the term ââ¬ËSouth Asianââ¬â¢ in order to accommodate all minority groups that formed it by including all South Asian countries in the definition. Conclusion Although various ethnic divisions exist in the group, which form the ties that bind the groupas their divisions make them very radical and active in economic matters as they compete against each other. An immigrant American woman from Bangladesh wears Hijab, which makes her appear different from a Korean woman, but both are regarded as South Asian minorities. Historically, economic and political factors have played a major role in empowering the South Asian Americans ever si nce their emigration to the US in the19th century when they found few job opportunities after which they had to find their own ways of gaining economic powers. Hence, their zeal to climb the economic ladder surpassed the locals who have lost values to modernization, while South Asians have stuck to theirs. Therefore, inferiority complex contributed to the strengthened relationships amongst South Asians,as it was the only option to resist oppression and support each other as community, thus enabling them to achieve a common social and economic growth in the western countries. Ultimately, South Asians resisted hybrid identity and lined multiple levels of negotiations courtesy of their brimming inferiority complex in a foreign land more than political and economic factors could have contributed.Advertising Looking for essay on asian? Field Essay: Regulatory -Making in the American States: A Review of Theories and Evidence Brian Gerber, State University of New York, Stony Brook Paul Teske, State University of New York, Stony Brook While most studies of the determinants of regulatory policy-making have concentrated on national-level issues, state-level regulatory politics represent a productive opportunity to examine the efficacy of competing theories of the regulatory process over variable political, economic, and demographic conditions. In this paper we discuss the significance of state-level regulation to broader theoretical understandings of policy-making. We review a broad set of recent empirical work in the context of three models of policy-making: principal-agent theory, Gormley's salience and complexity model, and Lowry's dimensions of federalism model. The relative effectiveness of the three approaches in explaining the dynamics of political controls or influences over state-level regulation is assessed in order to point to future theoretic directions for the field. We conclude by suggesting the need for a greater integration of incentive-based and issues-based explanations of regulatory policy choices in the states. Research Question: Is regulatory Policy-Making in the American states merely a review of theories and evidence? Hypothesis: State-Level regulations of policy-making are significant in the broadening of theoretical understandings of general policy making. Racial Discrimination in Policing Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 6250 words
Racial Discrimination in Policing - Case Study Example This project was conducted as a result of research done in the reading and reviewing of a great variety of racially motivated occurrences creating racial tensions and reactions to those tensions. This project focused its concentration upon the eruption of violence and the implications of racially motivated criminal actions. A specific incident which caused tensions to nearly roar occurred in Eltham, Kent when a young, eighteen year old Stephen Lawrence was murdered mere yards from his home by still unidentified white assailants. Perceptions within the public eye were such that racial discrimination was often spoken about by the witnesses, the family of the victim and others involved in the investigation. Though arrests were eventually made, no convictions were ever managed, the case remains open. After some deliberation and thought I chose to study racial discrimination in policing because I felt the consideration of public perception of racial discrimination in policing Eltham, Kent would be the most appropriate use of this information and an in-depth analysis of the processes and procedures in policing would facilitate understanding. Research was conducted to include true to life accounts of the entirety. This was the reason for seeking out governmental inquiries and files that would give accurate and even eye witness testimony of the events that occurred on 22 April 1993 in the brutal death of Stephen Lawrence. The methodology of this project was to develop the viewpoint of the various inquiries and police accounts along with the eyewitness accounts during and after the incident that erupted in the death of Stephen Lawrence more than a decade in the past. The impact of the work performed proves that one's perception of events rarely coincides with another's. There have been two inquiries into the events that transpired and resulted in the death of Stephen Lawrence in Waltham, Kent on 22 April 1993. Neither inquiry resulted in arrest and conviction of those responsible nor would those arrested at the time of the incident have been convicted, instead they were acquitted of the charges against them due to lack of evidence linking them to the crime. The inquiries were held to reveal the inadequacies of policing and the automatic perceptions of race implied or otherwise in the methods utilized while working to discover truth in the midst of mysterious occurrences. The evidence of these incidents would be documented several times in several testaments to the incident, including The Stephen Lawrence Inquiry, Report of an Inquiry by Sir William Macpherson of Cluny as advised by Tom Cook, the Right Reverend Dr. John Sentamu, and Dr. Richard Stone in February 1999. A treatise titled Racist Murder and Pressure Group Politics written by Norman Denni s, George Erdos, and Ahmed Al-Shahi from the Institute for the Study of Civil Society in London first published in September 2000. The Black Information Link of London also provided information in regards to Stephen Lawrence and the results of the official inquiries conducted. The annual reports of the metropolitan police in the United Kingdom would have been consulted, utilizing their annual

NHS Computer System Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3750 words
NHS Computer System - Research Paper Example Project management is further explained in five processes including initiation, planning, execution, controlling and closure. Moreover, it involves other knowledge areas such as time, scope, expenditure, risks involved, quality, commucation, procurement and even, integration at times (Milosevic 2003). The activities managed by the project team include identifying requirements, managing the expectations of stakeholders, and competing for time, scope, risk, cost, and quality. Projects are always marred by deviations from the scope, objectives and execution, and this has pushed project managers to link and harmonise change management, project control and risk management. This is because risks usually arise from inefficiency in management and inadequate documentation of changes (Heldman & Heldman 2007). Frame (2003) explains the importance of readiness by the project team to deal with changes and that it is risky to ignore a projectââ¬â¢s environmental impacts and adequate information in the planning stage. According to Kerzner (2006), change and risk management is important as it reduces the number and level of surprises. He further he explains that risks and changes are ââ¬Å"hand in handâ⬠as risks are usually created by changes. NHS computer system NHS computer system was created under the functioning of UK Department of Health, and the system was produced to deliver the NHS National Programme which falls under IT (NPfIT). NPfIT was, however, initiated by the Department of Health of England which was given the task of shifting England`s National Health Service (NHS) to an integrated, electronic care record which can be centrally managed for patients, also which has the capacity... The NHS program has recently come under criticism especially with Department of Health refusing to give solid information about its progress to external observers. This has even led to academics in computer related fields to write a letter to the Health Select Committee raising concern about the program. The government has also been under fire for its apparent reluctance to evaluate and audit the program, and in case the development of the policy gets failed, i.e. the ICT policy proposed tends to cost less and benefit more, much evidence regarding technology is lacking. In 2009, the Public Accounts Committee reported that, the risks to the deployment system are getting higher and further termed in as being ââ¬Å"as serious as ever,â⬠whereby they further continued to say that the base of the project is now almost ââ¬Å"way off the paceâ⬠, at this point further indicating the revision date which has already been extended i.e. the completion due date of 2014-2015 is still in doubt especially in the aftermath of the Fujitsu's contract being terminated, which had to cover the South. Moreover, it was concluded that there is already delay in essential systems, thus even if an effort to deploy the system is made, the clinical staff has high expectations which will not be possible to comply with. Furthermore, considering the current cost of the program, along with the managerial issues going on and also with the four IT providers being sacked, there has been an increase in the criticism going on about the project.

Boston beer case Essay Example for Free
Boston beer case Essay Boston Beer Companyââ¬â¢s main growth strategy was focused by differentiation. The sources of its competitive advantage can be classified as a company that provides high quality beer with unique flavors, a market driven approach, and a very efficient contract brewing strategy. Unfortunately, by the 1990ââ¬â¢s, their initial public offering of $30 went as low as to $8 per share. Since the easy of entry into the microbrewery business is low, that resulted in about 3000 new microbrewers into the market. When there became too many options available for the consumer, Jim Koch should have approached the situation and avoided the risks of the companyââ¬â¢s shares from falling, right when they saw stocks going down. He could have also approached having a more aggressive growth approach when the company went IPO. They could have avoided the company from becoming part of the niche market, which is still the case today. If he would have been a little more aggressive when they went IPO, they could have invested money into a brewery where they can meet their demands, not over exuberate the expansion. Also, they could have invested in finding the right marketing campaign like using celebrities or just advertising the beer to capture consumerââ¬â¢s attention. They really needed to create a type of quote or motto people would remember, just like Dos Equis and Coors light. Boston Beer Company has failed to that and for that reason their growth is still at a steady pace where is still not part of the big dogs yet. Since they focus so much on differentiation as their strategy, why couldnââ¬â¢t they capture consumerââ¬â¢s attention quicker and faster? In the 1990ââ¬â¢s, Jim Koch should have changed his company from getting into a niche market into a general market, so that today he still does not need to prove or go bar to bar, to ask them to carry their beer. It should be a first option when someone is opening a bar to have Samuel Adams beer because the consumers love it. He failed to do so by not taking advantage in the 1990s and he will still have to do the same beer pitch to bars, because of his mistake.

performance of the Board Jump game, in compares ion of the YH and GH players. Prior to the Olympic Games in Atlanta, the United States Tested the Olympic Team Board Jump players (N=20, ages ranged from 22.01 to 31.73 years) consisted of laboratory tests of maximum oxygen uptake, computerized strength measures, blood tests, etc, and a battery of field tests (anthropometries: height, weight, hand breadth, arm length, arm span; and skills: accuracy Jumping, dribble and jump-Jumping) that included assessments of physical characteristics, and physical performance components Bergemann, B 27 (1995) the mean vertical jump for the dominant leg was 54.03 cm (21.27 in), the non-dominant leg was 46.72 cm (18.39 in), and for both legs was 62.15 cm (24.47 in). This is higher than vertical jumps of 52.8 cm (20.8 in) for professional soccer players, 53.3 cm (21 in) for college basketball players, but less than 67.0 cm (26.4 in) for elite men volleyball players. The correlation coefficients for the anthropometric, vertical jump and the skills tests with the Experts Rankings we re very low. The correlation between the Total Composite T-scores and the Experts Rankings were the highest with r = 0.364. This is not significant but was very close to the r = 0.3783 needed for significance. Zapartidis, D. 28 (2009) in his study conducted under the heading, 'Factors Influencing Ball Jumpinging Velocity in Young Female Board Jump Players'. The study aimed to the investigation of the relationship between the Jumping ball velocity and specific anthropometric and physical fitness characteristics of young female team Board Jump players. The scholar selected some 220 young female board jumpers for the study and (N=220, mean à ± SD age 13.99 à ± 1.06 yrs and playing ... ...when tested. In the study the researchers assessed the speed, using a 30-m run, and agility, using the tests such as the stepping aside test. The teamââ¬â¢s Board Jump wing players are usually required to be faster and more agile than other field players. The scholars in the study saw some of these qualities of wing players but only partially, since the performance of back-court players was similar to that of wing players. There was no plausible explanations were offered for this lack of differences. However, the means for the speed and agility tests showed that wing players tended to be faster and more agile than back-court players. It is possible that the lack of statistical difference was due to a lack of statistical power. Unfortunately, the effect size could not be calculated from data presented in this study, since the standard deviation values were not reported.
